Training
After college entered the Royal Academy of Music the Hague; 1998 graduated cum laude Jazz and Saxophone. Educational travels to Cuba, Brazil and India.

 

Experience
Started performing as a professional musician 1984. Started his own groups with his colleague and friend, trumpeter Jarmo Hoogendijk as co-leader: Van den Dungen/Hoogendijk Quintet (contemporary Hard-Bop)and Brand New Orleans (Modern Jazz with African percussion).
Regular member of Nueva Manteca (Afro-Cuban nonet), The Cu-bop City Big Band (Latin Jazz Big Band), Paul Hock Group (modern/fusion Quartet), Louis van Dijk's Superband (Mainstream Sextet), Canta Brasil (MPB sextet) and La Banda Ir‚ (contemporary Cuban Timba Band). European tours with his quintet, sometimes joined by American drummer Cindy Blackman (Lenny Kravitz).
In various groups with American guests: Mal Wladron, Art Taylor, Woody Shaw, Jimmy Knepper, Kirk Lightsey, Lester Bowie and Jim McNeely.
In concerts by Nueva Manteca and The Cu-bop City Big Band shared the stage with Giovanni Hidalgo, Nicky Marrero, Luis conte, Orestes Vilato, Armando Peraza, Juancito Torres, Edy Martinez, Armando "Chocolate Armenteros", Bobby Sanabria, Claudio Roditi, Ralph Irizarry, Bobby Carcases and Oscarito Valdez.

 

Teaching
For many years professor in Jazz Ensemble at the Academy of Music Rotterdam. Guest lecturer at the Royal Academy of Music the Hague and the Academy of Music Zwolle. Master classes and clinics abroad: Royal College of Music - Leeds (UK), and Jyväskylä Institute of Music (Finland). Lectures in-depht about musical content and about the musical business. Introduced a new curriculum at the Academies of Music in Rotterdam and Groningen: Business Management for Musicians. Initiates and coordinates off-campus activities for students like the annual Academy of Music Rotterdam Jazz festival, inviting famous guest soloist from all over Europe to participate. Co-produces recordings of student performances.

 

Concerts
Since 1985 almost every year at the North Sea Jazz Festival the Hague (with different groups), Finland (Pori, Helsinki), Denmark (Copenhagen), Germany ( Nrnberg, Leverkusen), Austria (Wiesen), United Kingdom (London Salsa Festival, Leeds). 1986 thru 1994 his quintet was the most frequently invited Dutch Jazz group on the German stage. Many international tours with Nueva Manteca, AO USA, Canada and Caribbean. South America (Colombia) with the Edy Martinez Band.

 

Special Productions
Initiated special series in the main Concert halls of The Netherlands: "Latin America meets Jazz", "Latin America meets the Legends", "Porgy and Bess goes Latin", The Music of Jelly Roll Morton", "The Music of Louis Armstrong and King Oliver".

 

Organisations
Since 1993 artistic advisor of the Jazz and World Music Foundation, a nonprofit agency for Jazz and World music groups. Most of the aforementioned concerts and productions were organized by the Foundation.
1989 thru 1991 member of the board of governors of the Jazz in The Netherlands Foundation. 1987 thru 1991 member of the board of governors of the Delta Jazz
Foundation, which organized an annual European Jazz Festival in The Hague.
